DSEA Philippines Team Reaches More Than 24,000 People with the Good News

DSEA Staff Evangelists Scott Nute and Dan Grindstaff have just returned from the Metro-Manila area of Luzon, Philippines, having spoken to more than 24,000 students through our David Stockwell Speaks Out school programs; 18,332 of those students prayed the sinner's prayer, and indicated their decision to follow Christ, according to the report of the DSEA NEST (National Evangelist Support Team) Philippines team.   The NEST Philippines team worked hard to re-schedule these ministry programs which were postponed back in September, due to the devastating flooding which hit the Manila area as a result of Typhoon Ondoy (see related article below.)

Dan and Scott spoke in scores of schools to thousands of students every day, educating young people about drug and alcohol abuse, sexual immorality and AIDS, respect for authority, integrity, hard work, and the importance of education.  Then, most importantly, they were able to clearly communicate and present the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to invite students, teachers and administrators to repent from their sin, and to ask Christ to be the Lord and Savior of their lives.  We rejoice in this awesome conclusion to our annual Philippines evangelistic outreach campaign.  Pray for the NEST Philippines team, as they continue the work of follow-up and discipleship in the Metro-Manila area.

DSEA Philippines Team Returns to US, Safe and Sound - Update as of September 30, 2009

David Stockwell Team Ministers in Manila, Despite Arrival of Devastating Typhoon Ondoy

The DSEA Philippines Team has returned safely to the US, cutting short its planned evangelistic mission campaign in Pasig and Marikina Cities in the Metro-Manila area of The Philippines. Tropical Storm Ondoy, which hit the area Saturday, September 26, also known as Ketsana, caused wide-spread flooding and destruction, and has so far claimed 277 lives, in addition to displacing more than 700,000 people.

The storm dumped the heaviest rains in more than forty years, over sixteen inches in six hours, and flooded the nation’s capital.  Evacuees are struggling to survive in makeshift evacuation camps, crowding into schools, churches and gymnasiums, and even the Presidential Palace, which was opened to house some of those affected by the storm by order of the President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.  Another, stronger storm is headed toward The Philippines, and expected to make landfall by Saturday, October 3. The new storm is expected to become a Category 5 “Super-Typhoon.”  DSEA President, David Stockwell, along with leaders from the US and DSEA Philippines NEST (National Evangelist Support Team) Team, made the decision Tuesday, September 29, to cut the mission short, and get the US team out of The Philippines as soon as possible. Flights were re-booked “miraculously,” and the team was able to depart on the morning of September 30. All US team members have returned to their homes safely, grateful and aware of God’s grace and protection over the team. While in The Philippines, despite the destruction of the storm, the US team was able to minister in many ways, including the training and encouragement of about 80 local evangelists and pastors through its Victorious Life! Leadership Development and Evangelism Training Conference on Saturday, September  26.

It is amazing that while ministering at this conference, God’s protective hand was evident, as the DSEA team was largely unaware of the rain and flooding pounding the Manila area until early that afternoon, and even then, the devastating effects were not fully apparent. The group worshipped the Lord throughout the day, through singing, praise and worship, prayer, testimony, and strong messages from team members Blake Western, Dan Grindstaff, and Scott Nute on The Pre-Eminence of Christ, The Manifest Presence of God, and Preaching An Evangelistic Message, respectively.  David Stockwell delivered a powerful, two-part message on Spiritual Warfare, dealing with such issues as how to live a free and victorious life in Christ, how to pray for those who are lost and held captive by Satan, and how to see them set free with the spiritual weapons God has given us. (2 Corinthians 10:3, 4, and 5) Amy Stockwell and Beka Hawkins led in worship and singing; Todd Patton, Gary Cunningham, and Steven Stockwell testified of God’s greatness and encouraged the group.

Later that day, reports began to come in about the flooding and storm, and the team began to pray and ask God for guidance and direction regarding its mission campaign. Though most of the team schedules for Sunday morning worship services were cancelled, several team members were able to preach and minister at two churches, and David Stockwell and the entire team traveled to the Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach (JCSGO) compound to minister at a Sunday afternoon church service, normally attended by approximately 3,000 people. While attendance was significantly diminished as a result of the devastation of the floods, those who were there enjoyed a wonderful time of worship as Beka and Amy ministered in song, finishing with the powerful worship anthem, “Worthy Is The Lamb/Crown Him With Many Crowns.” David preached an awesome message from Isaiah 6 on the holiness of God, the sinfulness of man, and the call to GO and TELL God’s message – “Here am I, Lord – send me!”

About 150 people responded during the altar call, with various commitments of a desire to be a consistent witness for Christ, and several who gave their hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ for the first time.  Please pray for the DSEA Philippines team of national leaders, who are continuing the work of ministry in Metro-Manila, and are planning to re-schedule the Pasig/Marikina school projects in November. Pray that God will protect them and all of the people of The Philippines as the second, more powerful typhoon heads toward their country.

FLOODING IN METRO-MANILA - Update as of September 28, 2009

The DSEA team is safe and dry, despite the recent rains and flooding experienced in Metro-Manila as a result of tropical storm Ondoy, a Level Two Typhoon.  Saturday, Sept. 26, while the DSEA Team was hosting its Victorious Life! Leadership Development & Evangelism Training Conference at New Horizon Hotel, the storm dumped over one month's worth of rain in 12 hours time in the Pasig, Marikina and Quezon City areas of town.  High tides also contributed to the flooding of homes, churches, businesses and streets, forcing people to swim and walk through muddy waters to try to reach their homes and families.  Some reports are saying that even more rain fell in the area than in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

Some of the pastors and evangelists who were attending the DSEA Conference were affected by the storm - Pastor Ernie, one of our local leaders, and his wife, slept in their car Saturday night, because they could not get to their home.  Many churches cancelled services on Sunday as a result of the calamity.  School Programs that had been scheduled for the team on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday have been postponed, as many schools are being used as evacuation sites for those affected by the flooding.  Local leaders are working to rearrange schedules and find ways for the DSEA team to minister to these people who are in desperate need of food, water, clothing, shelter, and help.

Please pray for the DSEA team of nine Americans and more than fifteen Filipinos as they minister in the Metro-Manila area through October 5.
